Marching Gaels

The ROXBURY HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND strives to provide an atmosphere to which all band students can belong. It is a place where students learn values and standards, while depending on one another in their pursuit of excellence. Students learn about responsibility, doing their fair share, and working toward a common goal. They learn to value people, respect their peers, and not make judgments on the superficial. Future life lessons and values are instilled as a means for both personal and musical growth through the marching band activity.

This particular ensemble is one of the most accomplished marching bands of any in the state of New Jersey, as they have been crowned the 2009 USSBA National Champion, the 2007 USSBA Northern States Champion, and the 2007 New Jersey State Champion.

The Marching Band performs the half time program at all home and away football games. The competitive season includes performances at the state, regional, and national level, and the band has frequently performed at such incredible venues as the former Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands, the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Towson University, Hofstra University, and the historic J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The “season” for marching band is considered from September through November, with competitions ending in early November and football games extending (potentially) further into November based on playoff games. The Roxbury High School Marching Band hosts the “Roxbury Band Classic” competition each year which attracts high school bands from throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Beginning in May, preliminary rehearsals begin for all members, as show music is introduced and the foundations of visual basics are implemented. During the summer months, members of all sections (wind, percussion, and color guard) practice regularly in either sectional rehearsals or full band rehearsals at the high school, and some student leaders will organize host informal sectionals to “meet and greet” their section mates.
