Concert Bands

Symphony Band

Music is an integral part of our school curriculum. In addition to a comprehensive elementary music program, over 1,500 students participate in the band, orchestra and chorus programs that formally begin at the fifth grade level. Approximately 180-200 students begin their instrumental lessons each year in grade five. In the fifth and sixth grades, students remain in a routine lesson schedule receiving one lesson per week from one of the professional teaching staff. We are very fortunate to have a staff committed to each student experiencing the aesthetic elements of music, developing a desire to constantly strive for excellence, and to acquire an understanding and love of music that will last a lifetime.

The instrumental program at Roxbury High School offers a wide range of performance opportunities for our students. Three levels of Concert Ensembles including the 9th Grade Concert Band, Symphony Band, and Honors Wind Symphony are available to students by audition as performance classes. The instrumental music department also offers a curricular Strings Orchestra performance class as well . Our students are taught the fundamentals of tone production, sight-reading, technique, and musicality during these ensemble periods. Students also have the opportunity to study Music Theory on both the beginning and advanced levels, focusing on the aspects of analysis, aural skills, composition, ear training, dictation, music history, and appreciation.
