About Us

Our Vision Statement

By 2016, the Roxbury High School Instrumental Music Program will be recognized nationally as a leader among high school music programs and will be known for exemplary student achievement.

The Instrumental Music Department

Music is an integral part of our school curriculum. In addition to a comprehensive elementary music program, over 1,500 students participate in the band, orchestra and chorus programs that formally begin at the fifth grade level. We are very fortunate to have a staff committed to each student experiencing the aesthetic elements of music, developing a desire to constantly strive for excellence, and to acquire an understanding and love of music that will last a lifetime. A new system of “vertical teaching” was instituted during the 2004-2005 school year. Instrumental teachers share responsibilities of all levels of the band program and teach in the expertise of their primary instrument. Fourth grade students participate in a 7-day pre-instrumental music program. Approximately 180-200 students begin their instrumental lessons each year in grade five. In the fifth and sixth grades, students remain in a routine lesson schedule receiving one lesson per week from one of the professional teaching staff. Beginning in seventh grade, students are taught by the entire team during their regularly scheduled ensemble period. At Roxbury, we achieve success through excellence.

The School and The Community

Roxbury Township is located in Morris County, New Jersey, approximately forty miles west of New York City. It is predominantly a middle-income community, with a population of over twenty thousand residing in an area of twenty-two square miles.
